  Meca Live-Aboard

Great guides are not a dime a dozen. Your guide can make or break your trip. A great guide can make poor fishing tolerable and good fishing superb. Unfortunately, a bad guide can also ruin great fishing. It is no wonder that guides' names are closely guarded secrets and the first questions we are often asked when planning a trip is "How are the guides?" There are a few guides that if we could clone them, anglers expectations would always be met. These men are able to combine expertise with personality and experience with a sense of humor. In short, with these fellows you catch fish and have fun doing it!

For anyone who had the good fortune to fish with Martin McCord at Belize River Lodge, you know that Martin was simply the best fishing guide in the country. With Belize River Lodge for over sixteen years, he superbly guided the coastal waters of Belize and in the process stockpiled a wealth of fishing and navigational information. Martin expertly guided both lodge-based fishermen and captained one of the motherships from the lodge. Martin was our most requested guide at Belize River Lodge. We have never had a client who, once having fished with Martin, didn't want to return and fish with him the following year.

In the winter of 1999, Martin McCord resigned from Belize River Lodge to build, and then captain, his own 45' live-aboard yacht. The Meca was built wide for both stability and space. There are two staterooms, one fore and one aft, each with two beds and a private bathroom. An eating area separates the two sleeping areas for plenty of privacy (the crew sleeps on top). This sleeping and eating area is completely air-conditioned. There is a tape/CD player, VCR with TV monitor and ship-to-shore radio. Martin's boat, the Meca tows two well outfitted skiffs. This yacht is extremely well designed. Based upon Martin's vast experience, he was able to decide exactly how his boat should be laid out for maximum comfort, convenience and safety. Martin supervised every step in its construction.

From 1999 until 2006, Martin led live-aboard trips aboard this yacht he named after his wife Meca. Martin's trips further reinforced his excellent reputation and his repeat bookings were nothing short of phenomenal. During these years, Martin also trained other guides and mentored Dean Myers to guide his other skiff and ultimately, to be his successor.

In 2006, Martin finally succumbed to a worsening heart condition. It was a very sad day for all of us. But Martin's wife Meca vowed to carry on and Dean took the position he was groomed for and stepped in to become the Meca's captain. As a result, the tradition that Martin established is now being carried on in fine form.

If you've never experienced a live-aboard trip, the list of advantages over a land-based trip is lengthy. Here are just a few of the many advantages liveaboard fishing adventures offer: First, you have the ability to move well away from population centers which allows you to fish remote areas not available to land-based fishermen. Where you go and what you fish are totally up to you. This decision is often made daily after consultation with your captain. Secondly, you'll anchor in the lee of cays far away from insects and rough water where cool breezes make for perfect evenings. Thirdly, without the lengthy boat rides home, you can fish the most action-packed period in the tropics, the hour before and after sunset. Another advantage of liveaboards is the time you save by not traveling back and forth to a lodge translates to almost a full extra day of fishing over the course of a week's trip. And finally, you can schedule your meals to eat when you want and then fish, fish, fish!

So give us a call today and plan your live-aboard adventure aboard the Meca for next fall or spring. How can you beat the combination of a great boat and crew in the best permit and tarpon waters in the world?
