Los Roques
Los Roques is an exclusive Caribbean destination and an ideal retreat for couples, while also offering world-class saltwater fly fishing. Located approximately 75 miles north of Caracas, Venezuela, it is a protected National Park made up of roughly 350 islands and cays. Often referred to as an archipelago, Los Roques is technically an unspoiled atoll spanning about 22 miles east to west and 15 miles north to south, making it the largest marine park in the Caribbean. Most fishing areas are easily and quickly accessed by boat, allowing anglers to spend maximum time on the water. The park is centered around El Gran Roque, the main inhabited island, and is surrounded by dozens of largely uninhabited islands along with countless smaller mangrove islets and cays. Coral reefs and expansive, pristine flats encircle these land masses, creating ideal conditions for fly fishing. The region is defined by crystal-clear, calm waters, healthy coral systems, diverse flats, miles of white-sand beaches, and exceptional natural beauty.
The fishing operation is designed to deliver a highly personalized experience. Each boat is staffed with one experienced guide and one captain and accommodates one or two anglers. The fleet is currently being renovated with new 26-foot fiberglass center-console boats powered by 100 HP Yamaha four-stroke engines, providing a safe and comfortable ride to the fishing grounds, along with large casting decks and ample space for gear and equipment. The program hosts a maximum of ten anglers.
Anglers can target a wide range of species including bonefish, tarpon, permit, triggerfish, barracuda, parrotfish, snook, Spanish mackerel, bonito, numerous snapper species, and a variety of jacks, including horse-eye jacks. When weather conditions allow, offshore blue-water fishing is also available for adventurous anglers seeking species such as blackfin tuna, albacore, wahoo, and marlin. While Los Roques has long been recognized as a premier bonefish destination, the operation emphasizes multi-species fishing. Years of experience have resulted in deep knowledge of the fishery, with particular expertise developed in permit fishing. It is also important to note that Los Roques has experienced very limited fishing pressure since 2018 and was fully closed beginning in 2020, allowing fish populations and habitats to rest and recover. Fishing efforts are focused on the most productive areas to provide the best possible experience.
Los Roques is a true year-round fishing destination. Winter and spring, from mid-January through early May, are traditionally the most popular months due to favorable conditions. Summer months, from May through September, feature consistently low tides that create excellent opportunities for sight-fishing to tailing fish on the flats. Fall months, from October through January, bring slightly higher tides—typically six inches to one foot—along with increased bait presence, making this an outstanding time for targeting tarpon and permit. The program is designed to highlight the full diversity of the fishery throughout the year.
Anglers will primarily stay at Casa Play, a lodge well suited to visiting clients. The lodge offers eight private, air-conditioned rooms with hot water, in-room safes, and Wi-Fi. Six of the rooms are spacious two-story accommodations, each with a king bed on both levels, furnished simply and comfortably. Casa Play is set in a quiet, well-ventilated location with open communal spaces, teak furnishings, and a large terrace that houses the bar and restaurant. The lodge is conveniently located a five-minute walk from the airport and just one minute from the beach, where each fishing day begins.
